How To Navigate Transportation While On A Vacation To A Big City

Vacations to larger cities can be a lot of fun because there are so many different activities to do. When vacationing in major cities, it is not always practical to rent a vehicle. Renting a vehicle for transportation requires paying the rental car fees, finding and paying for parking, and dealing with the stress of navigating big-city traffic. Luckily, there are lots of other great transportation options when visiting a big city.

Shuttles

When visiting a large city, many hotels offer shuttle services to and from the airport. When you book your hotel, be sure to ask and see if the hotel offers a shuttle service to and from the local airport. This service is most likely to be provided by hotels that are located near the airport. Hotels that are located closer to the city may not offer this service. However, they may be able to recommend an independent shuttle bus service to you for transportation to and from the airport.

Car Service

Another option when visiting a big city is to use a car service. With a car service, you let them know when you want to be picked up and where you are going. You usually schedule this type of service in advance.  Depending on the car service, you may need to give them at least a few days' notice.

A car service is great because it provides you with a little luxury and takes away the responsibility of driving while on your vacation. You will get driven around in a luxury vehicle, and you will have a guaranteed ride for all the crucial stops during your trip.

Cabs

When you need a quick ride somewhere, you can use a cab. In large cities, near tourist areas, you can most likely flag down a cab, just like you see in the movies. Make sure the cab has its lights on before you try to flag it down; that's how you know it is on-duty and not already occupied.

You can also head over to a local hotel and see if their doorman will help you flag down a cab if you are having trouble getting a taxi on your own. Finally, it is a smart idea to look up and store the number of a few local cab companies in your phone, so if you are in an area without a lot of visible cabs driving around or are out late, you can access safe transportation.

Public Transportation

Finally, you can use public transportation during your trip. Be sure to find out how the local public transportation system works. Depending on where you are traveling, you may need to purchase your ticket before you get on the public transportation or you may be able to buy your ticket once you are on the bus or train. How you pay for your ride varies from one public transportation system to the next, so be sure to find out how the local system works where you are headed. If you get caught riding on public transportation without a proper ticket, you could face a fine.

When traveling to a big city, it is not necessary to rent a car to get around. You can use airport shuttles, employ a car service, hail a cab or use the public transportation system to get around while on your big city vacation.
